The Life of Esteban: English subtitles/ Dutch and French - Pelikaanstraat 20: Dutch subtitles/Dutch, French and Bambara spoken

The Life of Esteban (16’)

Esteban, a future Olympic swimmer, was raised by a single parent, his mother. He doesn’t know his father. In this poetic short film by Inès Eshun, Esteban searches for his identity and decides that swimming is a metaphor for life. The Life of Esteban earned the Student Visionary Award at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival.

Pelikaanstraat 20 (filmdocumentaire 60’)

For the CANVAS television series Vranckx & de nomaden, actress and theatre maker Aminata Demba travelled to Mali, the country from which her father came to Belgium in the seventies. The TV series resulted in a surprising documentary: Pelikaanstraat 20, named after the address of the tourist hotel where many Africans stayed upon arriving in Antwerp. Aminata digs up the stories of the first generation of Africans, and relates them to the present: Why do so many Malians leave their homeland, even today?
