How does our small human presence relate to the grandeur of the universe? Installation-maker Karl Van Welden (b. 1980) has been intrigued by that question ever since he started working on his cycle, Verenigde planeten (United Planets). In Mars II – a new stage in that cycle – he designed a fantastical setting that represents our so-called ‘society at risk’, in which pianist Fredrik Croene plays under a rain of falling ash that slowly transforms both setting and sound.
