De Sont of Mjoezik

Maria Zandvliet

Maria yearns for the life chronicled in The Sound of Music (1965), the international blockbuster film about a spirited nun called Maria, who becomes governess to the von Trapp family. To get as close as possible to that life, she sets about reenacting the entire film. Maria sings every song, she climbs every mountain. Maria embraces Maria and never lets her go.

De Sont of Mjoezik is a duet between a young woman and the silver screen, between an aspiring actress and the characters who shaped her. Poised on the edge of a hopeful girlhood and a promising future, she tries to be what she had once imagined she would be.

“Where at first Zandvliet seems to be imitating the film, we soon see that, on the contrary, an exchange takes place between the performer and the film. Thus, the film itself becomes a protagonist.” - Pien Visser in Etcetera, 01/06/2024
